How to choose, in plain language

Which floor holds up best in a busy home?

It depends on the room more than the product. Vinyl plank handles water, scratches and kids well, and it is the easy choice for kitchens and hallways. Engineered hardwood gives you the real wood look and can be refinished. Our rule of thumb: wet or messy rooms get tile or vinyl plank, living areas get wood or vinyl plank.

What is the best floor if I have dogs?

Look for a hard, scratch resistant surface that can take accidents. A good vinyl plank is one of the safest picks. Whatever you choose, a matte or textured finish hides scratches better than a high gloss, and a mat where the water bowl lives helps any floor.

What does the wear layer number mean?

On vinyl, the wear layer is the clear top coat that takes the scuffs, so it is the number to compare. 20 mil is 0.5 mm; our thickest is 30 mil. On hardwood, the wear layer is the real wood on top: the thicker it is, the more times the floor can be sanded and refinished. On laminate, compare the AC rating instead, from AC1 to AC5.

Floating, glue down or nail down: what is the difference?

Floating floors click together and sit on top of the subfloor, so they install fast. Glue down is very stable and quiet. Nail down is for wood over a wood subfloor. Which one you get is usually decided by the product and the subfloor, and we will tell you which fits your home.

What gets checked before a new floor goes down?

Three things: flatness, moisture and damage. Every maker publishes a flatness limit in its installation guide. On a concrete slab we test for moisture, and on a wood subfloor we look for soft spots and squeaks. Getting this right first is what lets the new floor last.

How much should I order?

More than the square footage of the room. Installers order extra for cuts and waste, and more for diagonal, herringbone or chevron layouts. We work out the number for you when we measure.

How do I pick a color?

See it in the room, not just in the showroom. Take samples home and look at them in your own light, morning and evening, next to your cabinets and walls. Every color on this page is on display, and we will lend you samples.

See them in person.

Every floor on this page is on display at 30092 Santa Margarita Pkwy. Ask us for the written warranty on any of them and we will print it for you.
