Design a Kitchen That Fits Your Life, Not Just the Trend
By Parham Shariat ·
Every year there is a new look. Open shelves, dark cabinets, glossy finishes, a bold tile. Some of it is lovely, and some of it will look dated in five years. More important, some of it will not work for the way you live.
A kitchen has to make sense. Before you fall for a trend, test the design against three questions.
1. How much maintenance can you live with?
Be honest about how much time you want to spend cleaning.
- Open shelving looks light and airy and collects grease and dust. If you cook a lot, you will be wiping dishes before you use them.
- Glossy and dark finishes show every fingerprint and water spot.
- Soft natural stone such as marble can etch and stain. It is beautiful, and it needs care. If that is not for you, there are durable options that give a similar look.
- Textured tile and grout lines are harder to wipe down than large smooth surfaces.
Choose materials for the person who will clean them on a Tuesday night, not for the day the photos are taken.
2. Does the layout work efficiently?
A kitchen is a workspace. The way you move between the sink, stove and refrigerator should feel natural, with enough room for two people to pass. Ask your designer to walk you through a typical meal, step by step, and watch for any point where you would have to cross the room, bend awkwardly or reach too far.
Storage is the most common thing people regret. Count what you own, and plan a place for each item, including the small appliances that currently live on your counter. Lighting matters too. Good task lighting over the counters does more for daily use than almost any finish.
3. Does it support the way you entertain?
Some families cook in a crowd. Some host holidays. Some mostly eat on the run. Your kitchen should fit the version that is true for you:
- Do guests gather in the kitchen? Then seating and space around the island matter.
- Do you cook while talking with people in the next room? Then sight lines and openness matter.
- Do you host large meals? Then a second oven, prep space and serving surface may be worth the budget.
The ten-year test
For each major choice, ask if it will still make sense in year seven. If the answer depends on everything staying perfect, choose something more forgiving. You can still add color and personality with paint, hardware, lighting and accessories, which are easy to change when the trend moves on.
Where US Floor Design Center fits
Our designers begin with how you use your home. Who cooks, who cleans, how often you host and what drives you crazy about the kitchen you have now. Then we show you materials in the showroom that suit that answer, and we tell you honestly when a choice will be a headache to maintain. You still get a kitchen that looks great. It just works, too.
Visit the showroom at 30092 Santa Margarita Parkway, Suite G, in Rancho Santa Margarita, or call 949-589-9226.
