When the city incorporated in 2000, it brought the original planned community together with Dove Canyon, Robinson Ranch, Rancho Cielo, Trabuco Highlands, and the Walden communities. Each still has its own character. Santa Margarita Town Center serves as a local shopping destination.

OC Bus serves parts of the city. There is no rail station in Rancho Santa Margarita; regional rail means connecting to a station in another city.
